Transforming Collections: Re-thinking Cataloguing, Online
Are you looking to develop the collections at your museum to ensure they are relevant for today and in the future?
The Transforming Collections programme is a series of sessions designed to help us to think about how we can explore, question, and review collections and collections information collaboratively to build more inclusive collections development practices.
This session will explore how museums can develop more inclusive approaches to cataloguing, from language and terminology to identifying gaps in collections knowledge.
Staff from Collections Trust will introduce the topic through the Spectrum standard and suggested procedure for Cataloguing, and we will hear a case study from Ruth Edson, Communities Learning Manager at Manchester Art Gallery, demonstrating rethinking cataloguing in practice. We will think about how museums can develop sustainable approaches to this ongoing process including collections research and collaboration.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Understand the Spectrum Cataloguing procedure
- Deepen their understanding of the ongoing process of cataloguing and how to develop knowledge of collections and record information
- Understand the benefits of collections research and collaboration to engage with visitors and communities you serve
- Have thought about your museums cataloguing practices and how you can develop an inclusive approach.
