Decolonising Museum Conservation Practice: change, control & standards
Conservators seem to have taken a back seat in discussions on decolonisation in museums, but their contribution is crucial. Irit Narkiss will review changes to conservation attitudes and approaches over past decades and suggest ways in which conservators can take more of a leading role.
Irit Narkiss initially studied archaeology and worked on sites and processing finds. She studied conservation at UCL, graduating with a BSc in 1994. Irit worked on a variety of short contracts, in museum conservation labs and teaching conservation at Lincoln University. She then completed an MA in Museology at Nottingham Trent University.
Irit has been working at Manchester Museum since 2004. In her capacity as Conservator of Objects and Access, in addition to ‘usual’ conservation duties, she spends much of her working time at the interface between the collection and its many users. She served as Editor of Icon’s ‘The Conservator’ (Now ‘Conservation’) for three years.
